Indian Tree Open Space Preserve to Stafford Lake (Novato)
There is not yet a trailhead at the south end of Indian Tree Open Space Preserve, so this segment of the Ridge Trail is an out-and-back trip, going from north to south. Hikers and equestrians explore Indian Tree’s redwood and Douglas-fir forests on a shady and well-graded trip. A number of viewpoints on the trail look out to different parts of Marin. The mountain biker route has some steep ascents and is in a more open landscape, with especially nice views of Novato. • From: Vineyard Road • To: end of Indian Tree Fire Road in Novato • Length: 3.1 miles one way for hikers and equestrians (plus 3.1-mile return to trailhead); 2.4 miles one way for mountain bikers (plus 2.4-mile return to trailhead) • Elevation Gain/Loss: 1,200 feet one-way • Accessibility: Hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. Cyclists take an alternate route. (This trail description is excerpted from the 2019 Guidebook. For details on all trails, trailheads, and more, buy the book from Wilderness Press.
